Governance

Both the Rural Energy Agency (REA) and the Rural Energy Fund (REF) are governed by the Rural Energy Board (REB). The Rural Energy Board consist of the following members:

  • a representative from the Ministry responsible for energy;
  • a representative from the Ministry of Finance;
  • a representative from the Ministry responsible for regional administration and local government;
  • a representative of the Private Sector;
  • a representative of the Tanzanian Bankers' Association;
  • a representative of a civic society;
  • a representative of the Development Partners;
  • a representative of consumers.

Management

Subject to the overall direction of the Rural Energy Board (REB), REA is headed by the Director General who is the chief executive officer for the Agency as well as the Rural Energy Fund (REF).

REA has a lean management structure comprising of two directorates; one responsible for Finance and Administration, and the other for Technical Services.

The Rural Energy Agency

Rural Energy Agency (REA) was established by the Act of Parliament No. 8 of 2005 as is an autonomous body under the Ministry of Energy and Minerals of the United Republic of Tanzania. Its main role is to promote and facilitate improved access to modern energy services in rural areas of Mainland Tanzania by working in partnership and collaboration with the private sector, Non-Governmental Organizations, Community Based Organizations and other Government agencies. REA is governed by the Rural Energy Board (REB) and is funded through the Rural Energy Fund (REF), a Trust Agent is responsible disbursement of funds.
